MINNEAPOLIS, Dec. 1, 2018

MINNEAPOLIS, Dec. 1, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Early yesterday morning, two earthquakes just six minutes apart shook Alaska's largest city of Anchorage, causing a tsunami warning and citywide panic. The earthquakes measured at a  magnitude of 7.0 and 5.8, respectively. City buildings suffered serious damages as a result.

"The earthquakes are now considered a foreseeable event, which means it's too late for travelers to Alaska to purchase travel insurance and receive compensation for their trip losses due to the earthquakes," said Beckah Ripley, Operations Manager for Yonder Travel Insurance. "Travelers to Alaska who purchased insurance policies prior to the earthquake may be covered for trip cancellations, depending on their policy."

Those who purchased a plan prior to the earthquake may be covered for nonrefundable trip expenses (flights, cruises, etc.) if the said common carrier services are halted for an extended time period. The Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport remains open at this time.

Similarly, prior purchasers may be covered if your hotels, resorts and rental properties are deemed uninhabitable due to the earthquakes.

Those who are seeking insurance for a trip to Alaska will not be eligible for coverage related to losses from the earthquakes. However, travelers may still be eligible for "Cancel for Any Reason" coverage.

This coverage gives travelers the opportunity to cancel for any reason at all. However, this coverage is only available if you purchase your travel insurance policy within 10-21 days of your initial trip deposit and only provides coverage for 50-75% of your insured trip cost.

Yonder Travel Insurance encourages policyholders and travelers interested in learning more about coverage to visit their website.
